GREAT LAKES NAVAL BASE

I was part of the team hired to design the exhibits in the U.S. Navy’s Great Lakes Training Station’s new visitor center. This 10,000 square-foot space — referred to by the Navy as an “immersive queuing corridor” — is the pathway the families of recruits walk on the way into the graduation ceremony hall.

To create this exhibit, we visited the training program several times, and were quite moved by the journey these young people were on. Subsequently we strived to engage their families as they arrived for graduation, and help build an understanding of the rigorous, nine-week training program the recruits just completed. We designed life-sized, interactive video stations to create the feeling of being guided through the training process by members of the graduating class. To create an immersive experience, the visitor path wound through over-sized equipment and images, soundscapes and dioramas before exiting into the Graduation Hall beneath the floor-to-ceiling hulls of two Naval cruisers.

Unfortunately I was not present for the entire installation, and as such have been challenged to obtain final photos. For the time being, below are a few images from my design development layouts, concept model, and mid-installation.
