As a long-time resident of this lovely suburb of Evanston on Chicago’s northern border, I have always questioned the city seal (see below). Yes, we have a lighthouse, but it is a tucked in a corner of a large, vibrant and diverse city. I was none too crazy about the church illustration in the emblem either, for it seems to nod to only part of the community. The seal feels exclusive and dated.
In the spring of 2020 — as happened to many people everywhere — the Covid-19 lockdown put all of my client work on hold. The silver lining was that availed me space to tackle projects for which I always wished I had time, and a re-imagining of the Evanston logo had been percolating in the back of my head for years.
This was a really enjoyable project, playing around with various landmarks and elements of Evanston to capture a more representative and fun snapshot.
The shape is roughly the Evanston boundary. Then instead of a lighthouse, the city’s Tallmadge lamppost is at the center, flanked by trees. That there are two light/commuter rail lines in this more urban suburb, led me to include a train overpass. I also gave a nod to the city’s sustainability + bike-friendliness initiative. The Northwestern University arch is present, as well as the Grosse Point lighthouse. I absolutely had to include some waves for the beloved Lake Michigan shoreline. And last but certainly not least, a soaring peregrine falcon to represent the pair that have been nesting 17-years-and-running at the Evanston Public Library.
There has been immediate positive reaction by many Evanston residents, so I have begun to create variations of the art and printing merchandise. Pieces can be found for sale at Stumble and Relish, Evanston Made, and my online shop.
